CHIARA FIGONE
The theme of this edition of the African Biennial of Photography focuses on multiplicity, difference, becoming, and heritage, as expressed by Malian writer Amadou Hampâté Bâ (19011991) in the words of the title. To collectively reflect on these multiplicities of being and difference, to move beyond the notion of a single being and embrace composite, stratified, and fragmented identities, as well as multiple, complex, and non-linear understandings of space and time. With more than 70 contributing artists, curators, academics, activists, and people from all walks of life, it offers a resilient and prescient assemblage of culture, thinking, and hope on the African continent.
